Musical Theater Residency
The Ordway’s Musical Theater residency is a program designed for Middle School and High School aged students incorporating elements of musical theater, literature, and critical analysis. Over the course of 10 sessions students learn to contextualize and examine musical theater through a modern lens. Using their own experiences as a tool for understanding, students are guided through an in depth analysis of the narratives found in some of the world’s most famous Broadway productions and discover their own voice in the process.
Residency Structure: Resident artists, school faculty and Ordway Education staff collaborate to identify both academic and social-emotional learning goals for each classroom. - Professional development for Staff: Half day professional development workshop, residency planning meetings, reflection and feedback meetings, full day cross site symposium.
- Professional performances at the Ordway: Musical Theater Residency schools attend musical theater performances individually selected for students and educators to attend. Residency classrooms use these experiences as a benchmark for exploring the literature, history and culturally context of the piece.
- In- School Residency Work: Includes 10 sessions with each classroom, guided reflection on performances with Ordway staff, an optional final sharing event where students perform for the school, parents and local community members.
- Support and/or introduce Musical Theater education in Middle Schools and High Schools
- Personalize the experience of attending a Musical Theater performance at the Ordway
- Encourage and facilitate critical thinking about live performance and arts-based instruction
- Work towards inclusion and equity in arts-based education
Charles Fraser has worked with the Guthrie Theater, Park Square Theater, History Theater, Playwrights’ Center, Yellow Tree Theatre, and Illusion Theatre, among others. Along with his fellow cast mates, he received the 2014 Ivey Award for ensemble acting in the Jungle Theater’s Driving Miss Daisy. Outside of the Twin Cities, he has acted at New Stage Theater in Mississippi and Lincoln Amphitheater in Indiana. He plays the role of Joe in the feature film The Completely Remarkable, Utterly Fabulous Transformation of a Regular Joe. As an seasoned improviser he has performed with the Brave New Workshop and aboard Disney Cruise Line’s flagship, Disney Magic. As a teaching artist, he has worked at the Guthrie Learning Center, Hennepin Theater Trust, Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists, Walt Disney Entertainment, Upstream Arts, Avalon Charter School, and Phipps Center for the Arts. He is also an adjunct professor of theater at Concordia University in Saint Paul.
