Try your hand at cricket, dress up, create wearable art, or make a screen-printed creation, all for free at the Flint Hills Family Festival! We’re grateful to the outstanding artists and organizations who’ve partnered with the Ordway to create these interactive experiences. AuSM Inclusion Square: Fortune Tellers
Autism Society of Minnesota

Individuals might be different, but we all speak the same language. Through a popular game most known as “Fortuneteller,” children young and old will learn how to interact with one another on a deeper level, through conversation-building skills! 

Recommended for all ages. Appearing on Thursday of School Week and Saturday of Family Weekend (inside the Ordway).


Author Meet & Greet: Bringing Books to Life!
Trần Thị Minh Phước

Meet and greet authors, read aloud, view a book display, enjoy educational hands-on activities and crafts-making, and watch a demonstration on how to make a simple bird feeder. Children will meet Trần Thị Minh Phước and Karen Latchana Kenney during School Days, and Sarah Elizabeth Warren will join the two authors on Family Day.

Recommended for all ages. Appearing on Thursday and Friday of School Week and Saturday of Family Weekend.


Arti Chandak, Henna Artist

Henna is a folk art from India. Henna is a plant known for the reddish color of its extract. It can be applied on mostly hands and feet. Arti has been doing henna art for more than 20 years.

Caterpillar Creations
Blast Off to Kindergarten

Children and families will make colorful patterns while designing caterpillar creations out of plastic eggs and pipe cleaners.

Recommended ages 5 and under with parent or guardian help. Appearing on Saturday of Family Weekend. 


Chicks on Sticks

Chicks on Sticks will stilt in colorful costumes and interact with the crowd.

Appearing all School Week and Family Weekend.


Chit Chat Clowns

Chit Chat Clowns will create balloon art.

Collaborative Collage
Minnesota Museum of American Art

Join artists in creating a collaborative collage, which will accumulate over time and speak to the impact we can have when we work together. Artists and museum staff will actively invite people to touch and play with the materials at hand. They’ll engage people in conversation about the creative process – idea generation, trial and error, self-expression, and collective impact. Prompts will be available, as well as “test” zones —spaces where people can get comfortable with different materials and experiment with some of their ideas before adding to the collaborative piece.

Recommended for ages 6 and up. Appearing on Wednesday of School Week only.


Dragons and Dragonflies: A Look at Vietnamese Culture
Hoang Anh Vietnamese Dance Group

Explore a dress up booth, craft projects (including making dragonflies), and educational displays focused on Vietnamese culture. Participants will learn through the educational displays, and apply that knowledge in making culturally-themed art projects.

Recommended for all ages. Appearing on Saturday of Family Weekend.


Decorate Your Own Bookmark
Children’s Theatre Company

Many of the shows in Children’s Theatre Company’s 2018-2019 Season are based off books – create and decorate your own bookmark to celebrate bringing these shows from page to stage! We encourage creativity by providing different styles of bookmarks and colors, so participants can create a piece that reflects their creative style and flair. This activity fosters learning through development of fine motor skills (using scissors, gluing, coloring within lines, etc.), and encourages the development of reading skills through a variety of book suggestions for all ages.

Dreamscape Mural
Forecast Public Art

Contribute to the Public Art Installation “Dreamscape Mural”: Help transform the under-construction park fence into art! Interactive murals designed produced by Electric Machete Studios transform the fence into a fun engaging active art zone!

Recommended for all ages. Appearing all School Week and on Friday and Saturday of Family Weekend.


Engineering and Building
The Science Museum of Minnesota

Families can engineer and build using sticks, baskets, PVC pipe, and more.  These activities are hands-on, involve critical thinking, and foster learning through doing.

Recommended for all ages. Appearing on Saturday of Family Weekend.


Funtime Funktions

Mr. Fun will be there with toys from around the world. Fun for all ages! Mr. Fun will have a face painter with him in the Fun Zone on Family Weekend!

The Great and Powerful Oz Crowns
SteppingStone Theatre

Transform a wearable headpiece into a custom work of art using 2D and 3D materials! Using our summer mainstage production of The Wizard of Oz as inspiration, design a crown that reflects your unique power as an artist and maker. Learning is fostered through design choices and visualizing ideas with 2D and 3D materials.

Recommended for ages 3 and up. Appearing on Saturday of Family Weekend.


Horse Drawing
Dreamworks Spirit Riding Free

SPIRIT RIDING FREE is a TV series that focuses on friendship and the power of working together as well as relationships with animals. Stop in for step-by-step instructions on how to draw a horse!

Recommended for ages 4 and up. Appearing on Friday of School Week and Saturday of Family Weekend.


Madagascar Coloring Sheets
Stages Theatre Company

Get your photo with a life-sized cutout board based on the upcoming Stages Theatre Company summer show Madagascar.   Enjoy Madagascar-themed coloring sheets and passport that will encourage learning about books. The booth will be decorated in Safari décor to keep up with the Madagascar theme.

Recommended for all ages. Appearing on Saturday of Family Weekend.


Magic Justin

See Magic Justin amaze crowds during the School Week with incredible sleight-of-hand, amazing feats and some crazy silliness.

Make a Fire Helmet
Saint Paul Fire Department

Use colored paper, scissors, and markers to make your own fire helmet and start thinking about fire safety in your own home.

Recommended for ages 4-7. Appearing during School Week only.


A Museum Without Walls
Hmong Museum

We envision a thriving community with a heightened Hmong consciousness.

The Hmong Museum exists to recognize and acknowledge the intersections of all things Hmong.

Painted Fireworks!
East Side Arts Council

We’ll use pipe cleaners, paint, glitter, and black paper to create images that look like fireworks in the night sky.

Recommended for ages 3 and up. Appearing on Tuesday of School Week.

Get Henna, play cricket or chess, and learn about the rich culture and traditions from India through interactive displays!

Petal Pockets
Silverwood Park (Three Rivers Park District)

Encouraging children to use petals in order to create a design inside of a petal pocket, and use patterns and colors to think about what real flowers look like. At the same time, investigate the parts of a flower, how plants work to children, and the relationship between flowers and growing food.

Screen Printing
Electric Machete Studios

Have you always wanted to try screen printing? Now’s your chance! Artists from Electric Machete Studios will introduce you to the technique with prepared screens and ink.

Parent or Guardian help required. Appearing on Saturday of Family Weekend. 


Silly Miss Tilly

The one and only Silly Miss Tilly will host the Fun Zone and make balloon art for Festival-goers.

Snakes and Ladders Gameplay
Ragamala Dance Company

Try out the ancient Indian board game, inspired by their performance of Written in Water. Takes place in the lobby of the Andy Boss
Theatre at Park Square one hour before each performance of Arch8’s Tetris.

Recommended for ages 3-7. Appearing on Saturday of Family Weekend (9:30-10:30am & 1:30-2:30pm inside Park Square). 


Squishy Circuits
Minnesota Children’s Museum

Tinker, design, and make a creation using circuitry through conductive dough and basic components made by locally developed and produced Squishy Circuits. Our Squishy Circuits activity provides participants a creative, hands-on, and approachable way to use their critical thinking and creative thinking skills, as well as gain confidence as they tinker, experiment, make attempts, build on their past knowledge, and persist in making their creation!

Recommended for all ages. Appearing all School Week and Saturday of Family Weekend.


Starry Sky
Bell Museum

Stamp out different summer constellations that we can see from Minnesota. Learn what a constellation is, and what kinds we see during the summer. Encourage creativity by exploring light and dark, and manipulating paper and using tools.

Storytime Puppets
Saint Paul Public Schools

Children and families will create popsicle stick puppets out of various materials in order to retell their favorite children’s stories.

Recommended for ages 4 and up. Appearing on Saturday of the Family Weekend.


Super Why!
TPT – Twin Cities PBS

Meet and Greets with Alpha Pig and Wonder Red throughout the day and literacy based activity utilizing letter stamps based on Super Why – Four fairytale friends who go on magical adventures and become readingpowered superheroes.

Recommended for ages 2-6. Appearing on Friday and Saturday of the Family Weekend.

Green Card Voices utilizes digital storytelling to share personal narratives of America’s immigrants, fostering tolerance and establishing a better understanding between the immigrant and non-immigrant populations.
