Once on This Island Brings the Caribbean to Minnesota in February

Cast led by members of the Broadway revival

SAINT PAUL, Minnesota (January 8, 2020) – Winner of the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, Once on This Island brings the Caribbean to the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts from February 4–9.

Once on This Island is the sweeping, universal tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world, and ready to risk it all for love. Guided by the mighty island gods, Ti Moune sets out on a remarkable journey to reunite with the man who has captured her heart.

The groundbreaking vision of two-time Tony Award nominated director Michael Arden (Spring Awakening revival) and acclaimed choreographer Camille A. Brown (NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live) conjures up “a place where magic is possible and beauty is apparent for all to see!” (The Huffington Post).

With a score that bursts with life from Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, the Tony Award-winning songwriters of Anastasia and Ragtime, Once on This Island is a timeless testament to theater’s unlimited possibilities.

“This revival of Once on This Island is truly a magical theater experience like no other. I cannot wait to share this transformative production with Ordway audiences,” said Rod Kaats, the Ordway’s Producing Artistic Director.

Cast members from the 2017 Broadway revival of Once on this Island  lead the touring company, including American Idol Alum Tamyra Gray as Papa Ge, Cassondra James as Erzulie, Tony Nominee Phillip Boykin as Tonton Julian, Courtnee Carter as Ti Moune and Tyler Hardwick as Daniel Beauxhomme. Completing the gods of the island are Jahmaul Bakare as Agwe and Kyle Ramar Freeman as Asaka.

The cast also includes Briana Brooks as Andrea, George L. Brown as Armand and Danielle Lee Greaves as Mama Euralie, along with Mckynleigh Alden Abraham, Michael Ivan Carrier, Jay Donnell, Phyre Hawkins, Savy Jackson, Alex Joseph Grayson, Tatiana Lofton, Robert Zelaya, and MiMi Crossland & Mariama Diop.

Highlighting the vibrant culture of the Caribbean, the revival’s authentic set design features many natural and immersive elements rarely seen on the Broadway stage.

“All the elements that were the talking points of the Broadway design have been maintained for the tour: the sand, the rain, the fire, the wind,” said Scenic Designer Dane Laffrey. “From the moment the audience walks into the theater, they get that communal feel of the Caribbean.”

Audiences are advised to arrive early as the actors engage with the audience before the show’s start time.

This production features new orchestrations by original orchestrator Michael Starobin, who is joined by AnnMarie Milazzo, Costume Design by Clint Ramos, Sound Design by Peter Hylenski, Tour Sound Design by Shannon Slaton and Lighting Design by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer.

The Once on This Island national tour is produced by Ken Davenport, Hunter Arnold, and NETworks Presentations. Additional producers include Carl Daikeler, Roy Putrino, Broadway Strategic Return Fun, Sandi Moran, Caiola Productions, H. Richard Hopper, Diego Kolankowsy, Brian Cromwell Smith, Ron Kastner, Rob Kolson, Judith Manocherian/Kevin Lyle, Jay Alix/Una Jackman/Jeff Wise, Witzend Productions/Jeff Grove/Wishnie-Strasberg, Mark Ferris/Michelle Riley/Marie Stevenson, Conor Bagley/Invisible Wall Productions/Silva Theatrical Group, and The Harbert Family/Keith Cromwell/Red Mountain Theatre Company.
