ST. PAUL, Minn., January 18, 2018 – The Ordway Center for Performing Arts announced today that producer and director Rod Kaats will assume the position of Producing Artistic Director beginning February 1, 2018. Mr. Kaats succeeds James A. Rocco, who stepped down from the Ordway last year.

“This is an exciting time for the Ordway as we welcome Rod to build on our renewed commitment to producing Ordway Original programming in addition to our work as a first-class presenting institution,” said Jamie Grant, President and CEO of the Ordway. “We look forward to Rod bringing his vast experience on Broadway and from around the world to develop new work that will advance diversity and inclusion with the stories we tell on our stages and the artists who tell them.”

Having worked on some of the most iconic and diverse theatrical productions of the last 30 years, both on Broadway and across the country, Rod Kaats, (rhymes with “gates”) brings a wealth of experience to his new position at the Ordway, having directed productions at major regional theaters, been an Assistant Director on Broadway shows and produced shows internationally on four continents. As the Vice-President of Pace Theatrical Group (now Broadway Across America) and one of the founders of The Booking Group, he is part of a small group of people who helped to revolutionize touring commercial theater in the United States.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Ordway team. Throughout my career, I have marveled at the richness, diversity and vitality of theater in the Twin Cities. The Ordway has led the way – balancing exciting performing arts programming with meaningful education and other outreach initiatives that make the organization an essential element of the community and theater in the U.S.,” said Mr. Kaats. “I look forward to creating Ordway Originals with local performers and creative talent, with guest artists as well as welcoming productions from Broadway and around the world. I also look forward to advancing collaborative partnerships with other theaters in the Twin Cities and around the country. I can’t wait to get started!”

“We are delighted to welcome Rod to the Ordway,” said Laura McCarten, chair of the Ordway’s Board of Directors. “He clearly understands the important role the Ordway plays in our community and on a national level. His remarkable background in the commercial and not-for-profit theater makes this an ideal partnership. We’re looking forward to the many ways Rod’s expertise, global professional relationships, and creativity will be able to help the Ordway fulfill its mission for the Twin Cities.”

Mr. Kaats was selected from a diverse field of national candidates following a search conducted by a committee of the Ordway’s leadership and Board Chair.

The Ordway will announce its 2018-2019 season in late-February including its Musical Theater Series, Music & Movement series and exciting family, concert and comedy events.
