Ordway season packed with musical theater legends

A current Broadway hit caps off the season full of musical theater legends at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.
“An American In Paris,” which just notched a year on Broadway, is the dance-centic musical based on the Gene Kelly movie set just after the end of WWII. Featuring the music of George and Ira Gershwin, it will close out the Ordway’s 2016-17 season in June 2017.
The season begins with a new production of “Lerner & Loewe’s Paint Your Wagon,” based on the Western-set musical. In addition to the Gershwins and Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, the musical theater offerings include classics from Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein (“West Side Story”) and Irving Berlin (a return engagement of “White Christmas”) as well as a new touring version of John Cameron Mitchell’s “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” whose title character is a trans rocker with a chip on her shoulder.
The Ordway also announced its next season of world music and dance performances, including an Ordway-commissioned work by St. Paul’s TU Dance. The season includes six special performances, which include Stomp, Twin Cities music legends the Steeles, a return of “Hip-Hop Nutcracker” and a circus spectacular from the producers of “The Illusionists” called “Circus 1903.”
