Pioneer Press: Ordway’s 2014-15 season has favorites flavored with nostalgia

Nostalgia is the theme of the just-announced season at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.

The Ordway will bring in several classic musicals, including “Camelot,” “Damn Yankees” (a locally created production), “Evita,” the operetta “The Pirates of Penzance” and “Sing-a-Long-a Grease,” which kicks off the season in July.

Even the new shows have a hint of the past: the Ordway’s production of “A Christmas Story: The Musical” is based on the holiday movie classic and the stories of Jean Shepard. A smash on Broadway the past two seasons, it’s the late-’30s-set tale of a rambunctious boy who longs to get an air rifle from Santa.

“Nice Work If You Can Get It,” which starred Matthew Broderick on Broadway, is set in the Prohibition era, when a wealthy scoundrel falls for a bootlegger. The new musical features songs by George and Ira Gershwin, including the title number, “I’ve Got a Crush on You” and “Someone to Watch Over Me.”

In the past, the Gershwins have been the focus of the Ordway’s “Broadway Songbook” series, which will return next season with a pair of shows that spotlight the history of Broadway and rock music on Broadway. Rounding out the season is “The Illusionists,” an evening of magic and escape artistry.

The Ordway’s world music and dance performances will pay tribute to one of the United States’ neighbors to the south with Nachito Herrera and his Cuban Orchestra, Creole Choir of Cuba and Contra-Tiempo, an Afro-Cuban dance/theater company.

Also in the Ordway season will be singer/dancer/percussionist Dobet Gnahore, Camille A. Brown & Dancers (at O’Shaugnessy Auditorium), Irish music group Cherish the Ladies and dance troupe Diavolo.

Subscription packages are on sale Tuesday and can be purchased at or 651-224-4222. Individual tickets will go on sale June 23 at the same locations. (Camille A. Brown & Dancers tickets must be purchased through O’Shaugnessy Auditorium at or by calling 651-690-6700).
