West Side Story School Matinee Special Engagement

School Performances, Ordway Music Theater

From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is considered one of the greatest musicals of all time. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story takes us back to New York’s Upper West Side in the mid-1950s where racial and socail tensions run high. Arthur Laurents’ book remains powerful, poignant, and timeless; while the score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is widely regarded as a masterpiece.

This Ordway production will be brought to life through a collaboration with artistic leaders from the Twin Cities community, including Teatro del Pueblo’s artistic director, Al Justiniano. This collaboration will create professional career opportunities and offer developmental programs for racially diverse, veteran, and aspiring professional artists working in the performing arts.
