Rosy Simas Danse presents Weave

Music & Movement Series, Ordway Music Theater

In collaboration with The O’Shaughnessy and Ordway

“Rosy Simas understands water. She understands the human is water. That water is human. That understanding becomes movement in Weave.”
— Marcie Rendon

An Ordway co-commission, Native choreographer Rosy Simas (Seneca, Heron Clan) creates Weave, a dance project drawn from the interwoven and interdependent nature of our world. In Weave, individual and embodied stories are the vibrant threads that mesh in a performance woven of story, dance, moving image, and sound.

Weave sounds our stories into the world. They return as reverberation, enlarged beyond one meaning. Rosy Simas creates from a place of deep listening. This work asks us to listen with our whole bodies and imagine what more we can hear. What do our senses tell us when we stop projecting what we expect? In Weave the embodied stories of an international gathering of artists—who are deeply listening to themselves, to each other, and the world—creates a wire-like tension that pulls individual and communal experiences into relationship. The result is movement in shapes as diverse as the artists themselves. In response to deep listening, deep telling. These stories the artists bring to their work, that they pull from their work, that they show us, are beyond gesture, beyond words. To receive them, we too must listen differently, read differently, relate profoundly. Weave is at once brilliant and totally what I’d expect from an Indigenous perspective, from a holistic worldview, from artists engaging the body in the world: It is wonderful, fine, and rare.”
